In 1899 her husband, Alexander McEwen, fell off his horse their first year of marriage, breaking his neck, leaving his wife and a two month old son who died the following month.
In 1903 after the death of her own father Rachel moved to Fall River, Massachusetts, joining a partnership of four home nurses. Her youngest sister Anna joined her there as a nurse as well.
After almost 20 years of nursing (and Anna's death) Rachel joined another sister Sarah Jane and her husband Marshall Crawford in Alexandria Bay, New York.
Rachel worked there for the Crawford Coal Company until her death.
