children 1848, 1849, 1850 but he failed to make proper returns on their property to Houston Co. Ga. tax office. The minor children said that they didn't want to live with him so in 1851, p. 269 of this book states that John T. Cooper was appointed guardian. He was their Uncle-Harriett's brother.
John T. Cooper was also apt. guardian of Hattie Newell Brooks- b.April 1, 1849, a few weeks before her mother's death- around 1861 when her half-brother Albert Green Brooks went off to the Civil War. Tax records in Fayette Co. Ga. from that time frame indicate that Albert Green Brooks was guardian and paid A. Moses for her board, tuition and books.Albert Green Brooks d. April 2, 1865 in Petersburg, Va. Harriett would have been 16yrs by then.

Departed this life, on the 26th April, Harriett A. Brooks. She was born 28th Jan. 1817, joined the Baptist church in Hamilton, 1834, was afterwards married to Mr. James Jones. After his death, she married Mr. Ivy Brooks, of Monroe Co., who afterwards removed to Houston county.
The subject of this notive was the 2d daughter of Rev. J. W. Cooper and Nancy Cooper; by whom she was brought up in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord."
She has gone, but she has endeared herself to many whom she has left behind. It has been the pleasure of the writer to know but few such saints. She was the uncompromising servant ov Jesus Christ, at all times.
She died as she had lived. To her father and other kind friends, who asked after her prospects beyond death, she would say, "I trust only in Christ." "I long to see the angels coming to convey me to the mansions in the skies."
She said to her father, "I am sorry to see you weep for me. When near unto death she said "I am going into the 'Ship of Zion,' and she will land me safe."
Her's was one of those peculiarly triumphant deaths, that God grants to some of his dear children. Her place in the family, and in the church can never be filled.
May God order this dispensation of his providence to increase the spirituality of the church to which she belonged, and to the promotion of his glory. May all who read this notice, feel like she felt. "Tis heaven to rest in thy embrace and no where else but there." B.P.P.
