Robert E. Byrd was born on January 8, 1882 to parents, Joseph Edgar Byrd and Helen M. Wilder. His father, Joseph, was a Confederate Veteran from New Orleans, while his mother Helen was the daughter of a farmer and former Union soldier from Forestville, N.Y.
After Robert's father passed away from an unfortunate bout of malaria while traveling for work, Robert and his mother moved around for many years.
Although Robert had a few years of "hard times" and was sent to reform schools and youth authority facilities (Burnham Industrial School & Preston School of Industry) he went on to do great things in his life later on.
Not only did he start his own manufacturing (die-cast) businesses, but he also patented several of his creations, leaving behind a family legacy in the manufacturing industry.
Robert E. Byrd died from congestive heart failure and kidney failure on December 17, 1930. He is buried at the Lakeside Cemetery in Erie, Pennsylvania.
