JOSEPH WILLIAM "JOE" HERBOLD
Funeral services for Joseph William Herbold will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, with burial at the Colfax Cemetery in Colfax, Iowa.

Joseph William "Joe" Herbold, the son of William Joseph and Mary Ceclia Maher Herbold, was born December 17, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa. Joe was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. He attended Colfax Country School and graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines, where he was an All-State Tackle.

On April 15, 1944, Joe was united in marriage with Lucille Ward. Joe loved the land and enjoyed farming. He was very proud of his Century Farm. Joe was a devoted Dowling supporter. He enjoyed going to the Lake of the Woods, camping and raising tomatoes. Joe was always thinking and writing about the genealogy and history of his family and Jasper County. He was a devout Catholic and a friend to everyone. His smile and the twinkle in his eye made him very approachable and easy to talk to.

Lucille died on November 15, 1991. After Lucille's death Joe found a friend in Marjorie Cross and on January 30, 1993 they were married. With this union came a new family and he loved being "Grandpa Joe". Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Jasper County Farm Bureau; the Newton Elks Lodge; and the Newton Moose Lodge.

Death came to Joe at the age of 82, on Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Park Centre Health Care in Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille; and his brother, Gerald.

Those left to honor Joe's memory include his wife, Marjorie Herbold of Newton; stepchildren, Darrell Cross, Diane Hansen and Susan Mooers; 15 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and 17 special nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a public prayer services will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton or Hospice of Jasper
County.
