William J. Hunter, son of John and Nancy Hunter of Cecil Twp., Washington County, PA, was 20 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army. He was a Private in Company D, 10th Pa. Reserves, which was raised in Canonsburg as the Jefferson Light Guards in April 1861. He died of typhoid fever in Belle Plains, Virginia on Jan. 30, 1863. His body was returned home for burial in Covenanter Cemetery in Chartiers Twp., Washington County, PA.
