Wife of John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

~

October 20, 1789
Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaPacketThursday the 8th inst, died at Tusculum, near Princeton, Mrs. ELIZABETH WITHERSPOON, spowse of the Rev. Dr. Witherspoon, President of the College of New-Jersey. She was born in Scotland, May 17, 1721. Her ancestors for several generations were respectable for their station, and many of them remarkable for their piety. She herself was eminently pious from her earliest years; and the leading feature of her character through life was a fervent love to all the friends of evangelical truth. She was plain, frugal and domestic in her taste and habits. She neither loved shew nor sought fame; yet the situation and employment of her husband, with who she came to American in 1768, necessarily introduced to acquaintance and intercourse with many of the first characters in this country; and it may be safely said, that in all the time which hath elapsed since that period, she never lost a friend, or made an enemy.
