Ed Kinney first arrived in Pleasanton, California in 1968. In 1972, "Smilin' Ed" Kinney, with the smiley face as his campaign symbol, ran for and won a seat on the Pleasanton city council and later was elected the city's mayor. He soon earned the nickname of "Mr. Parade" because of his many years announcing various parades which were held in Pleasanton. Kinney also spent many years working as a realtor Hometown GMAC Real Estate. In November 2004, Kinney survived an aortic aneurysm, the same condition which killed his father and two brothers. Around the same time, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on April 29, 2005.

Hundreds turned out for a memorial service at the Alameda County Fairgrounds Wednesday for former Pleasanton mayor and civic leader Edward Joseph Kinney, who died last Friday at Bruns Hope Hospice in Alamo. He was 67.
Mr. Kinney was elected to the Pleasanton City Council in 1972 and was chosen mayor in 1975 and 1976. He started researching Pleasanton's history soon after and became so engrossed and involved in city and civic affairs that he turned down an out-of-state promotion by his medical supply employer in 1983 and started in the real estate business. In 1990, he was named "Salesman of the Year" at Hometown Brokers, now Hometown GMAC Real Estate.
A Pleasanton resident since 1967, Mr. Kinney was probably best known to young and old for the 26 parades he organized and announced over the years, earning the title of "Mr. Parade." Even if you didn't know him or couldn't see him calling out the parading floats and organizations on a crowded Main Street, he was clearly "the voice of Pleasanton" for more than three decades.
Active in civic organizations and nonprofits, including organizing and being the emcee at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Lions Wayside Park, he also was passionate about the Museum On Main Street and a board member of the Amador-Livermore Valley Historical Society which operates it. A graduate of San Francisco State University, Mr. Kinney also was a founding member of Pleasanton Presbyterian Church's Men's Club "Balloon Platoon," a rollicking group dressed as fat sailors that has entertained thousands at parades here and around the world.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Roberta; a son Scott Kinney and his wife Ann; another son Brad Kinney and his wife Lillian; a brother Richard Kinney; a sister Jackie Howard, and four grandchildren.
Interment was at Pleasanton Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made in Mr. Kinney's honor at the Presbyterian Church-Ministries, 4300 Mirador Dr., Pleasanton 94566; Museum On Main Street, 603 Main St., Pleasanton 94566, and to the Bruns House & Contra Costa Hospice, 3470 Buskirk Ave., Pleasanton Hill, CA 94523.
