Born in Wisterton, County Durham, the son of William Blanch. Married in Northumberland, England to Emma Lees. Father of William H. Blanch II. Immigrated to America in 1893. He was killed in a mine explosion near Johnstown. William initially escaped from the mine, but being one of the foremen, he organized a rescue party to go back in, and never made it out.
