Anna/Annie was the daughter of John Kotila and Emma nee Sarja. She was reportedly born in Michigan. She married Henry Oskar Rytilahti on June 17, 1893 in Osceola, Michigan. Subsequently the couple went to Finland where their four daughters were born: Hilja (1895-1972); Hilma (1898-); Heli/Helen (1900-1913); and Hilda/Emilia (1902-1913). Following Oskar's death in 1905, Anna returned to the U.S. with her daughters in 1906 and married Matti Kotajarvi (c. 1885-1980) on April 12, 1906 in Calumet. She had four children with Matti: William/Willi (c. 1907-); Anna/Annie (c. 1909-1913), who was killed at the Italian Hall, Annie's twin brother Arthur (c. 1909-), and Alice (1913-). Anna's daughters Heli, Emilia, and Annie, who were killed with her at the Italian Hall, are buried together with her. Her sons Arthur and Willi were present but survived. Following Anna's death, Matti remarried and had nine additional children with his second wife.
