Steve Kovach passed away peacefully Saturday, July 27, 2013 embraced in the presence of family at the age of 88. He was born to Anna and Steve Kovach on Oct. 5, 1924, in Mt Sterling, Pennsylvania. He had four siblings, George, Joseph, Rose and Ann. Steve served his country in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Signalman on the destroyer USS Converse. He married Georgene Erna Heitmann from Gifford, Idaho in 1952. The couple settled in Portland and had two sons, Steven and Paul. Steve and Georgene provided a wonderful childhood experience with family and friends always present. Georgene died tragically in a car accident in 1969. Steve worked in sales and eventually started his own insurance agency, Midway Insurance, with his long-time friend, Dean Dickinson, where he worked for many years until his retirement.

Steve found love again and married Beverly Steinbach on May 8, 1982. They were blessed with 31 years of marriage. Steve and Bev enjoyed much together, but his favorites were always the trips to Lincoln City and the Oregon coast. Steve loved fishing with his sons, computers and any place that would serve him a decent breakfast or cup of coffee with his morning paper. In his retirement, he became a master carver and enjoyed gardening at his home of more than 50 years. Nothing, however, brought him more joy than a gathering involving family, especially his grandchildren Eric, Rachel and Brian and more recently the arrival of his great-grandson Chase.

Along with wife Beverly, Steve is survived by his sons and their wives, Steven Kovach (Christine), and Paul Kovach (Diane); grandchildren, Eric Kovach, Rachel Firebaugh (Matthew), and Brian Kovach (Penny); great-grandchild, Chase Dean Kovach; sister Ann Gargiulo of New York; Bev's beloved children, Debbie Schroeder (Roland), Mike Steinbach (Del), David Steinbach (Trish Lawrence), and Jan Daniels; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and Georgene's family who provided years of support and reside in Lewiston, Idaho, Jim Heitmann (LaVonne), Carolyn Heitmann Cronrath, Wilbur (Pete) Smith, and Millie Heitmann; and many nieces and nephews. Steve is preceded in death by George Heitmann, Clifford Heitmann, Adetha Heitmann Smith, Norbert Heitmann, Jean Milne Heitmann, Anna Heitmann Alkire, and Pastor Daniel Cronrath.

A celebration of life will be held on Aug. 13, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Creator Lutheran Church, 13250 SE Sunnyside Road, Clackamas, Oregon 97015. He will receive full Military Honors at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd Portland, Oregon 97086 at a 2:00 PM committal service.
