Francis Wardlaw was educated at Charlotte Military School. For a time during the Civil War he was a drill master of North Carolina troops. He returned home and was made 2nd Sergt. of Captain James M. Perrin's company, Orr's Rifles. He served in Virginia until his death from Typhoid fever and congestive chill at Manchester Hospital.
