John M. Goodwin was a farmer and served in the 42nd Va Infantry Co. E "Dixie Grays" under Capt. Andrew Jackson Deyerle.

He enlisted the 13th of March 1862 in Salem, Roanoke County, VA. He was sick several times during the war and was admitted to the hospital (Greenwood Station Hospital 7 Aug 1862, Liberty Hospital (Bedford) 6 May 1863, Lynchburg Hospital Sept. 1863). He was promoted to 1st Corporal when he was captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse the 12th of May 1864. And he was imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD from the 18th of May 1864 to the 3rd of August 1864. Then from the 6th of August 1864 to the 2nd of March 1865 he was imprisoned in Elmira Prison Camp, NY. John was exchanged at James River and was admitted to Richmond Hospital thereafter.
