Brian was a St. Louis Police Detective. He was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a shooting suspect.

He and another officer were working an off duty security job when they heard the shooting call on the radio. Shortly thereafter they spotted a man meeting the description and went to investigate.

As they approached, the man produced a .25 caliber handgun and shot Detective Graft in the chest and his partner in the leg. Both officers returned fire but did not strike the suspect, who fled on foot.

Responding officers engaged the suspect in a gun battle and took him into custody.

He was survived by his beloved mother, Alice Graft (nee Penzek) and the late Milton J. Graft, dear brother of David F. Graft and Clare Potter; grandson of Alice Penzek, cousin of Marilyn Deane, Charlotte Thomure, Kathy Doan, Rosemary, Fred and Charles Graft, dear brother-in-law, uncle, nephew and cousin.

Brian was a close friend of mine. He was so young and it was such a shock at the time, he was a friend to many and we still miss him.

Thanks to someone who cares that sponsored his memorial.
