Rena was the third child of Rev Harrison Clay Trammell and Mary Jane Hampton. She was a teacher.

She married Zenos Caleb Smith on 8 Jan 1896 in Angleton, Brazoria, Texas. After a difficult pregnancy on 3 Sep 1896 she gave birth to premature twins, one of whom survived, but suffered debilitating complications herself. She died at home with her family on 21 Oct 1900, at sunset.
