Thelma was the only child of Wyatte and Grace Cummings Cavendish. She grew up in Skelton where her father was an official for the New River Co. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1935. Later she earned A.B. and Master's degrees from Marshall University in elementary education. She spent 30 years teaching in Fayette and Raleigh County elementary schools. Both Thelma and her husband, Eustace Glen Cantley, were charter members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shady Spring. For several years they lived at Flat Top Lake, but they spent time in Louisville, Ky and Lake Worth, Fla. Her husband of 54 years preceded her in death in 1995 after retiring as assistant principal at Marsh Fork High School. Thelma is survived by five children: Glen "Ike," Byron "Ron," and Steve, all of Lake Worth; daughter Mary-Jo Broyles and husband, Joe, and Cyntha Susan "Susie" Sayre and husband, Kin. Arrangements entrusted to Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
