Philip M. Bushong

Philip Merton Bushong was born December 14, 1957 in Elkhart, Indiana to parents Merton and Carolyn Bushong. He went to be with his Lord and Savior July 23, 2013. From a young age, Phil had an intense interest in learning. He started reading before entering school, and wanted to read everything from then on. In elementary school, his teachers were dismayed by his very detailed airplane and tank drawings on the backs of all papers (and maybe not so great work on the fronts), but it was a sign of things to come, as he earned his B.S, M.S. (from Texas A&M), and Ph.D.(from Virginia Tech) in Aerospace Engineering. In junior and high school, Phil played baritone in the band, and developed a love for music of various types, especially bluegrass, country, and classical. He also became a motorcycle guy, and always had a "scooter" from then on, along with his other beloved vehicles. He worked with his father and siblings in the family business, Bushong Construction, until a couple of years beyond high school, when he went on to further schooling. Phil lived most of his adult life in King George, VA, and worked for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA. While there, he joined and was very active with the Northern Virginia Gun Club, where he pursued his love of the shooting sports- skeet and trap shooting, and made great friendships. He had a soft spot for cats, especially, and bird watching and photography became an interest as time went on. He was a believer in Jesus Christ. Phil loved to discuss, argue, philosophize, or teach just about anything, but especially politics, science, religions, music, books, and movies. Several years ago, Phil was diagnosed with kidney failure, and although the body failed, he was still reading, learning, designing, and engineering to the very end. Phil is survived by his father Merton, sister Liz Bushong, brothers Paul and his wife Dona, Tom and his wife Jannett, Ben and his wife Vanessa, nieces and nephews Cassie Sisti, Sarah Bushong, Ellyce Bushong, Kyle Bushong, Jacob Bushong, Rachel Bushong, Gabby Bushong, Madelyn Bushong and Ayla Bushong. He is preceded in death by his mother Carolyn. Family will receive friends at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 27, 2013 for a visitation one hour prior to funeral service at Plano Bible Chapel, 1900 Shiloh Road, Plano, Texas 75074. Service will follow at 11:00 AM. Phil will be laid to rest at Fitzhugh Cemetery, Lucas, Texas.
