Charles W. Zeger, Jr., 80, of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, died at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005, in the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born March 24, 1925, in Mercersburg, he was a son of the late Charles W. Sr., and Mary Wilson Zeger.

Mr. Zeger was a 1943 graduate of the former Mercersburg High School. Following graduation, he served with the Army Air Corps during World War II as a cryptographer in India. Following his discharge, he enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., and graduated in 1950.

Mr. Zeger was employed by Allegheny Power of Hagerstown, Md., as a tax accountant from 1950 until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Mercersburg. During his membership he served as trustee, elder, deacon, treasurer, financial secretary and auditor. He was a life member of Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241 and member of Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517, both of Mercersburg.

Mr. Zeger played in the Mercersburg American Legion Band for 13 years. He volunteered for Franklin County Meals on Wheels Program. For 51 years, prior to Memorial Day, Mr. Zeger was responsible for placing American flags on the graves of veterans at Fairview Cemetery and surrounding cemeteries near Mercersburg.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Koons Zeger, whom he married September 9, 1956; a son, Brian E. (husband of Nyamtsoo) Zeger of Palmetto, Florida; a stepgranddaughter, Mandahi Zorigt of Orlando, Florida; one brother, Raymond W. Zeger of Mercersburg.
