He was a son of John & Margaret (Trimble) Atkinson, and he was married to Clarinda L. Snedeker.
He fought for the Union with Company K, First West Virginia cavalry. According to his biography in the HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY, he and his father were well-known abolitionists.
