Charles was the son of Peter and Eliza Beaumont. At the age of 19, he entered the military service and passed unharmed through the Mexican War. When the Civil War started he rejoined and fought for the Union in
Company K 12th Illinois Infantry, serving from May 1, 1861 until June 13, 1866. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh and promoted from second to first lieutenant for his bravery.
After the war, he moved to Wisconsin where he married Elsie Jameson in Rock County on October 19, 1874. This was his second marriage. Charles and Elsie had 5 children. His obituary says he had 3 children surviving from his first marriage.
