Dorothea W. Sackman, age 93, died October 29, 2009 at Sippican Healthcare Center, Marion, where she had been a resident for the past six years.
Born on March 25, 1916, to the late Dorothea Brun and Leslie W. Winslow, she was raised in Bronx, NY.

She was the devoted wife of the late Eugene R. Sackman, with whom she shared 48 years of marriage. After residing in the New York and New Jersey area for many years, in 1957 Dorothea and Eugene moved to Mattapoisett with their three daughters. While living in Mattapoisett, she worked for 20 years as the Medical Records Librarian at the former Parkwood Hospital in New Bedford. She and her husband loved to travel, and their favorite trips were to England and Ireland. She was an avid reader and could often be found reading at the Mattapoisett library. Dorothea also enjoyed watching and cheering for the New York Yankees.

Upon retirement, Dorothea and Eugene moved to Harrodsburg, KY, where they lived for 19 years. While in Harrodsburg, she was proud of her involvement with the Mercer County Red Cross, where she was chairwoman of the blood drives throughout the county. Dorothea moved back to Mattapoisett 12 years ago to be near her family.

Survivors include three daughters, Lesley Kelley and her husband Paul of Mattapoisett, Nancy Makuch and her companion Ray Rogers of Stagecoach, NV, and Janet Day and her husband Richard of Lebanon, IN. She had eight grandchildren, Donna MacDougall and husband Chris of Marion, Kathy Linhares and husband Edge Coble of Melrose, Donald Linhares Jr. and wife Cathy of South Dartmouth, Cheryl McKoy and husband Matthew of Abington, Audrey Myre and husband Rick of Mattapoisett, Chris Makuch and wife Shauna of Rochester, Jamey Day and Sarah Day, both of Indianapolis, IN, and ten great grandchildren. She leaves two nieces, Peggy and Penny Dervitz of NJ, and her cousin, Ruth Murphy of WA.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 1 PM at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in Cushing Cemetery.
