DEARING, Henry Earl, (Hank), 79, of Salem, died on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Hank was born on November 24, 1922, the son of Henry W. and Iva Smith Dearing. He served in the Air Force in World War II, 82nd Fighter Group, as pilot of the P-38 Lighting, and returned to graduate from VPI in 1948 with a degree in civil engineering. He retired from Norfolk Western Railroad after 35 years as Senior Engineer of Construction. He was a lifelong member of the Penguin Club in Salem. Hank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret (Peg) R. Dearing and seven children, Sharon Theede and Danny Layman, Robin Dearing and Bill O'Conner, Nora Delatush and Richard Kidd, Molly Dearing, Mark and Sandra Dearing, Lissa Dearing and Allan Lewis, Brian and Bridget Kelly Dearing, and close cousin, Walter (Junior) and Chelsea Dearing. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A wake will be held at the Penguin Club on March 23, 2002 at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad or the Salem Animal Shelter. Arrangements by the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.
