Sarah Gould Cannon was the daughter of Charles and Mary Pease (Fisher) Cannon, and was a descendant of Mayflower passengers John and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland. On Sept. 3, 1866, she married Leander Remington Peck, who became a prominent Rhode Island businessman. They had two children, Frederick S. Peck and Edith Peck Phillips. The family lived at Osamequin Farm, Barrington, in the summer, and much of the rest of the year in Providence. Sarah was well-known for keeping a beautiful home and for her collection of silver and copper lustre. After the death of her husband in 1909, Sarah donated land and had the Leander R. Peck School erected in Barrington. The school served the community many years and now houses the Barrington Public Library. Sarah also provided, along with her son, $10,000 towards perpetual care of a memorial tomb erected in memory of her husband by their daughter. It stands today not far from the family plot in Princes Hill.
