WILLIAM ROE VICTIM OF GUN SHOT WOUND
Class-mates, teachers and friends paid final tribute Wednesday morning to William Roe, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roe, victim of an accidental shooting.
Requiem high mass was celebrated at 10 o'clock in the St. Philip Catholic church. Rev. John Delane was celebrant of the mass and the responses were sung by the choir.
Scores of friends attended the services and a special car was required for the many floral offerings.
Pallbearers were Clifford Huffman, Paul Heaney, Arthur Knight, Calvin Jenkins, Allan Morrison, John Hoehne, Claude Sorenson and Jackie Hoehne.
Interment was made in the Philipsburg Cemetery.
The Wilson funeral home of Philipsburg was in charge of arrangements.
The youth died at 8 o'clock Sunday night in the St. Ann's hospital of Anaconda. He was wounded Saturday afternoon. The boy had taken an old .32-caliber single-shot pistol from the home of his parents without their knowledge, Sheriff Angus McDonald said he was told.
He had gone near the cemetery for target shooting in the company of a friend, John McDougal, 12. After firing one shot the two started home, stopping at an abandoned building to read some comics, McDougal told Sheriff Angus MdDonald. The Roe boy had placed the pistol underneath his sweater.
Youn McDougal told the sheriff he heard a shot and turned to see his companion slump over. Sheriff McDonald said there was no trigger guard on the pistol and that the bullet apparently was accidentally discharged when the trigger caught on the boy's clothing.
The McDougal youth notified the boy's mother. Dr. A.C. Knight gave him emergency treatment and he was taken to the Anaconda hospital in the ambulance of R.R. Wilson, his parents, and an aunt, Mrs. Caroll M. Huffman. The bullet entered the youth's right side, coursed downward throughtheliver, and lodged in his left pelvis. An emergency operation was performed and a blood transfusion was given.
No inquest will be conducted, Coroner Arthur A. Longfellow of Deer Lodge county, who had jurisdiction over the boy's death, said.
Young Roe was born in May, 1926 in Utah but was brought to Philipsburg at an early age by his parents. He was a pupil in the sixth grade of the Philipsburg elementary school, and a member of the local Boy Scout troop.
Besides his parents he is survived by four brothers, James, Thomas, Stephen, and George, all of Philipsburg; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Roe of Grand Coulee, Washington, and the following uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Huffman; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Roe and Charles and Timothy Roe of Grand Coulee; Mrs. Charles Bassett, Boulder City, Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Monteer, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Darton, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mayne, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. William Mayne, Bingham Canyon, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. James Westfield of Seattle, Washington; Mr. and Mrs. William Owsley of Butte; Mrs. Mary Spaulding of Butte, and Miss Byrde Mayne of Salt Lake City.
