Andrew Batts real name was John Covington Morris. He took his wife's maiden name when he left Limestone County AL and went to Louisville KY and joined the Union Army during the Civil War. This is because he killed his uncle Covington Edmondson in Limestone County during an argument regarding the Civil War. There is a lengthy transcript of his attempt to gain a pension for his service in which these events are described.
