A crash on Interstate 69 Thursday left two men dead and two other people in critical condition after a semi hauling an empty car carrier sideswiped another semi being repaired on the side of the interstate.

Baer Field Speedway announced the two dead were championship car owner Blaine Miller and his grandson, 2009 Front Wheel Drive Champion Jeff Shelmadine.

Officers and emergency personnel were called about 1:15 p.m. to the southbound lane of I-69, near the Union Chapel Road exit and directly across from Parkview Regional Medical Center, said Jeremy Tinkel, Allen County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Tinkel said one man died at the scene and three other people were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. A second man later died at the hospital, Tinkel said. He could not identify the victims.

"When you're pushing that much weight, as the semi was, and you have a vehicle that's stopped, especially a semi, the impact is tremendous," Tinkel said. "Anybody involved is going to have multiple injuries, especially if they were outside of the semi as they were in this case."

Miller, the founder of Blaine Miller Road Service, was assisting a broken-down semi on the west side of the interstate when the truck was struck by another semi, a statement from Baer Field Speedway said.

Miller was a well-established car owner for drivers including Dave Bice, Steve Christman, Bobby Blount, Brian Ross and "Chargin' Charlie" Glotzbach, Baer Field said.

Shelmadine won the 2009 Front Wheel Drive Track Championship and was runner-up in 2010 to his teammate Bobby Smith. Shelmadine had won four-straight Street Stock Features at the Angola Motorsports Speedway this season and was runner-up in the Street Stock Feature at Baer Field Saturday night, according to Baer Field.

Immediately after the collision, all southbound lanes of I-69 were shut down and northbound lanes slowed to a halt as onlookers watched from their vehicles, some pointing at the mutilated semi trailer.

The metal trailer that was struck was crumpled from the front wheels to the back and the label for Celadon Inc. unreadable on the side of the vehicle.

A few yards ahead, the semi carrying the orange car carrier came to a rest sideways on the interstate, the metal carrier smashed and twisted.

Across the road, several people stood along the fence surrounding Parkview, watching as crews cleared debris from the area and attempted to pull a man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, from underneath one of the trucks.

Southbound lanes of traffic remained closed for several hours as vehicles were rerouted. On the other side of the median, officers redirected northbound vehicles into the far right lanes.

By 4 p.m., one of the southbound lanes had been reopened, allowing drivers to proceed slowly through the area.

Information was not available Thursday about why the driver of the car carrier semi struck the parked semi, Tinkel said. The driver was not injured in the crash.

Baer Field: Crash killed Blaine Miller, Jeff Shelmadine

Statement as issued Thursday by the Speedway.

Baer Field Speedway is saddened to announce the tragic deaths of Championship car owner Blaine Miller and his grandson, 2009 Front Wheel Drive Champion Jeff Shelmadine.

As the founder and an employee with Blaine Miller Road Service, the two were assisting a broken-down semi on I-69, when the truck they were working on was hit by another semi.

Miller was a well-established car owner for drivers such as Dave Bice, Steve Christman, Bobby Blount, Brian Ross, "Chargin' Charlie" Glotzbach and many others. Miller himself took to the wheel of a Front Wheel Drive in 2009 and won a Feature and set a track record. This season, his cars had recorded eight Street Stock Feature wins at three different tracks. As a rookie, Jeff Shelmadine won the 2009 Front Wheel Drive Track Championship and was runner-up in 2010 to his teammate Bobby Smith. Jeff collected five wins and 11 fast qualifier awards during his three-year career in the class. This season, Shelmadine had won four-straight Street Stock Features at the Angola Motorsports Speedway and was runner-up in the Street Stock Feature at Baer Field last Saturday night.

Our thoughts and prayers are with daughter and mother Pam and the entire Miller team and their families.

Baer Field Speedway will announce details for a memorial and services as they become available.

Two people are dead and two others critically injured after two semis crashed Thursday afternoon on southbound Interstate 69 near the 316 mile marker.

A white semi was stopped on the side of the road, being serviced by a local roadside assistance company, when it was struck in the side by a driver hauling an empty car trailer at around 1:15 p.m., said Allen County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Tinkel.

It was unclear which vehicles the victims were in or near. One person was dead at the scene and another died later at a hospital. A fifth person involved was uninjured. Police shut down the southbound lanes at Union Chapel Road to cut off access to the crash scene at the 316.4 mile marker by Parkview Regional Medical Center at Dupont Road.

Traffic headed southbound was diverted at the Union Chapel Road Exit 317. That southbound traffic reportedly was backed up into DeKalb County at 3:30 p.m. As of 3:30 p.m., an Indiana Department of Transportation unit foreman on-site estimated the road would be closed for at least another two hours, according to Mary Foster, INDOT spokeswoman.

The first lane of southbound traffic at the crash site was reopened to traffic at about 4 p.m.
