Explorer. Born in Florence, Italy, he was a skilled navigator and one of the early explorers of the New World. In 1497, as a trade ship pilot he was very interested in finding a quicker way to sail to Asia. He went on four voyages 1497 to 1504, to Central and South America, including Venezuela and Brazil. He was also known by the name of Americus, thus the continents of North and South America were named in his honor. After his explorations, he returned to Seville, Spain and became its Master Navigator until his death.
