First Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in North Yorkshire, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Northampton Shire Regiment, British Army. On January 28, 1881, in heavy actions at Laing's Nek, South Africa, when a retreat was ordered, Lieutenant Hill remained behind and tried to carry out another officer who was severely wounded. He lifted the man and tried to carry him off the field in his arms until the wounded man was shot dead. He then went and brought another wounded man out on his horse and afterwards returned and rescued another. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and later achieved the rank of Major. His original name was Alan Richard Hill. After his marriage to Muriel Lilias Oliphant Walker (his maternal cousin) in 1902, the couple assumed the surname Hill-Walker.
