Poet, Author. Born to middle-class, West Indian immigrant parents in Harlem, in the early 1980s, helped to start "Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press." In 1991, she was named New York State Poet. She is probably best known for her prose writings included two collections of essays, "Sister Outsider," (1984) and "Burst of Light," (1988), and the autobiographical "Zami: The Cancer Journals," (1980). Her poetry publications include "The First Cities," (1968), "The Black Unicorn," (1978), and "Undersong: Chosen Poems Old and New," (1993). She began Women of Color Press, and established the St. Croix Women's Coalition. Her awards included National Endowment for the Arts grants in 1968 and in 1981, Creative Artists Public Service grants in 1972, 1976 National Book Award nomination for poetry in 1974 for "From a Land Where Other People Live," 1987 Walt Whitman Citation of Merit, and Poet Laureate of New York in 1991. She died of breast cancer in St. Croix.
