Tibet Expedition Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Roorkee, British India, He served as a Lieutenant in the 8th Gurkha Rifles. During the assault on the fortress at Gyantse Dzong Tibet, China, on July 6, 1904, Lieutenant Grant was leading the storming company. He had to advance up a bare rock-face, with little or no cover available and under heavy fire. Followed by a few of his men, he attempted to scale it, but on reaching near the top he was wounded and hurled back. Regardless of his injuries he again attempted to scale the breach with his men, covered by the fire of the men below they reached their object. He with the others behind him, shot one of the enemy on gaining the top and was successful in the assault. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on January 24, 1905. Remaining in the service, he served in World War I and retired a Colonel in 1929. He died at the age of 89 in Kent, England.
