Alton Byron Jensen, lifelong resident of Washington County, died at his home on December 28, 1985 at the age of 81 years. He was born March 24, 1904, on the family farm near Kennard, to Nels Martin and Anna Truhlesen Jensen. The family moved to Blair for a few years, then returned to the farm in the March School District, where he assisted his father and brother in the farming operation.
Jensen was initiated into the John S. Bowen Masonic Lodge in Kennard and later transferred to the Landmark Lodge No. 222 in Herman, where he served as the Worshipful Master in 1960 and has been honored as one of their Fifty Year Members. He was a member of the Herman Chapter 216, Order of Eastern Star.
Jensen and Eleanor Josephine DeVinney were united in marriage on May 17, 1932. They started farming south of Herman where they have resided for 53 years. He retired from active farming four years ago due to ill health.
He was honored as a 50-year member of the Omaha Livestock Exchange and was a past member of the Farm Bureau and the National Grange.
Jensen's special interests were singing and reading, particularly Lincolnesque material.
He was baptized and a member of the Congregational Church in Blair and later transferred membership to the United Methodist Church in Herman.
He was survived by his wife, Eleanor, son Larry of San Mateo, California; daughter Sally Jensen, Omaha; and three grandchildren, Dirk Byron, Brooke Alise and Nels Joseph Jensen of California; sisters Myrtle Rose of Cory, Colorado, and Mildred Loomis of York, Pennsylvania; and one brother Marshall N. Jensen of Longwood, Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold and sister, Enid Wardell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. December 31 at the United Methodist Church in Herman, Nebraska, with Pastor Larry Orvis officiating. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Roger Jensen, David Wardell, George Kegler, S.Harold Paulsen, Frederick Heinssen, Steve Mencke. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Miller, Wayne Loftis, Merle Wardell, Terry Andrew, Floyd Ricker and Lloyd Jacobs.
