*The heroism and selflessness of fire professionals must always be honored and remembered.*

For one so young, Scott led a full, adventurous life.

Scott Daniel Norris was born in Prescott and has been a resident of the Prescott area all his life. He attended Liberty Traditional School and Bradshaw Mountain High School where he was a 2003 graduate. He then attended Yavapai College where he received his firefighter certification.

He has worked for Pro Water Irrigation, NAU Biology Dept., Payson Hotshots, and most recently Bucky O'Neil's Gun Store and Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew. Scott served as a Hotshot for approximately five years.

In his time off during this recent fire season, Scott made it a priority to spend time with family, friends, his girlfriend Heather, and their dogs. Scott and Heather recently made trips to some of his favorite places in Arizona: Beaver Creek, Clear Creek, and Fossil Creek.

Scott had a creative side as well and was an exceptional writer. While traveling he sent descriptive, entertaining emails, and once in a while he even penned a poem. He enjoyed learning about how things work – from dog training to firearms, and he was passionate about weather-watching, especially thunderstorms and snowstorms.

Fellow hotshots described him as being a brother to them. They felt lucky to work side by side with Scott and were always grateful for the countless times he made them laugh and smile.

Scott had a magnetic personality and brilliant mind. He would talk to anyone, debating on countless subjects. Payson Hotshot Evan Whetten said Scott was "one of the toughest, most unbreakable guys, with the biggest and sweetest heart of anyone I've ever known. A true original, Scott was never afraid to be himself and did not follow trends. He was his own man. He would do absolutely anything for a friend."

Scott Daniel Norris, 28, lost his life Sunday, June 30, 2013, along with 18 others, while defending the town of Yarnell, Ariz., from a devastating wildfire.

Scott was born Oct. 12, 1984, and has been a resident of the Prescott area all his life.

Scott was adventurous, clear-thinking, thoughtful, witty, hard-working, and-courageous, and he had a talent for making people laugh and enjoy life. He had a passion for God's creation, and spent much of his time outdoors - hiking, biking, climbing, and snow-boarding. He made several backpacking excursions into various parts of the Grand Canyon, and in 2010 was trip leader for a 230-mile, 20-day private raft trip down the Colorado River, which included his parents and close friends.

While off-season from wildland firefighting, he traveled to Thailand, Cambodia, and explored our own beautiful country. He made an extended trip with his good friend, Ian, to Central America, where they visited Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Scott was preceded in death by his aunt, Jo-Ann O'Leary Demarino. He is survived by proud parents, Jim and Karen O'Leary Norris of Prescott Valley; sister, Joanna Norris; grandmother, Helen Hale; brother-in-law-to-be, Miles Ritter; brand new nephew, Elijah James Ritter, and girlfriend, Heather Kennedy. He also leaves behind an adoring multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held for Scott on Saturday, July 13, 2013, 10 a.m. at The Potter's House Christian Church on Highway 89 in Prescott. Scott will be buried at the Pioneers' Cemetery in Prescott. The burial service will be private. Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. Scott Norris, 28, was one of the newest members of the Granite Mountain crew: He transferred from a hotshot team in nearby Payson earlier this year and started work at the beginning of the fire season, about six weeks ago.

In the off-season, Norris worked part-time in sales, shipping and receiving at Bucky O'Neill Gun Shop in downtown Prescott. After six months in the shop, he'd built a rapport with the customers, said co-owner Jim Marnell. Older customers in particular liked his gentle manner, ability to remember faces and tendency to joke around. "He was raised right," Marnell said. "He just came out a good person."

Norris spoke often about firefighting, Marnell said, and the rugged lifestyle of a hotshot crew. "I asked him once, how long he went without a shower," Marnell said, "and he said, ‘14 days.' No showers. Sleeping in tents. And he loved it."

Norris was an outdoorsman who went to the mountains in his leisure time, shot his own guns and rode a mountain bike. He was born and raised in Prescott, where he graduated from Yavapai College. He was not married and had no children. [Laura J. Nelson LA Times]
