Verna A. Downing, 87, Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Watertown, died Wednesday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Downing retired in January 1971 as a senior typist for New York state in the parole and transportation divisions. She had lived in Lakeland for 31 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lakeland, and several canasta clubs.
Born May 5, 1915, in Watertown, daughter of William J. and Clara Keller Lawrence, she graduated from Watertown High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. She married Lawrence E. Downing on June 11, 1949, at Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Merritt W. Updyke officiating. Mr. Downing, owner of the former Commodore Restaurant, died Jan. 23, 1987.
There are no known survivors. A sister, Edna J. Lawrence, died before her.
There will be no funeral or calling hours. Arrangements are with Heath Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Lakeland.
