Harriet L. Mendell

SALAMANCA - Mrs. Harriet L. Mendell, 73, of 230 Frank St., Salamanca, died peacefully Monday (April 8, 2013) at her home, surrounded by her family.

Born Feb. 19, 1940, in Daytona Beach, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Helen Hensel Raines. She was married Nov. 24, 1962, in Red House, to Mr. James R. Mendell, who survives.

She was employed as an account clerk in the Salamanca city Comptroller's Office prior to her retirement.

She helped implement the crafting of the Burden Bears, a military support program for wounded veterans. She enjoyed taking cruises and trips with her daughters and dear friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crafting, cooking, rose gardening, bird watching and her ragdoll cat, Stella.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, James Mendell of Cassadaga; five daughters, Joyce (Paul) Nelsen of Falconer, Judith (Vanessa Simms) Mendell of Hilliard, Ohio, Janice Tinnerman of Salamanca, Jerri (Stephen Alvarez) Mendell-Kelly of Dundas, Ontario, Canada, and Julie (Dennis Jr.) Ewing of Kane, Pa.; seven grandchildren, William Yaworsky of Salamanca, Mikaylynn "Mickey" Tinnerman of Salamanca, Garret Tinnerman of Salamanca, Abbie Nelsen of Falconer, Halle Nelsen of Falconer, Kyle Ebeling of Kane and Blake Ebeling of Kane; a sister, Sharon Burlin of Salamanca; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Louise Mendell.

Burial will be in Green Cemetery, Great Valley.
