When Bert was born, his mother never recovered and died a few months thereafter. Next door neighbors, and cousins to his mother, Joel and Caroline Sherman took Bert into their home during his mother's illness, leaving his older siblings with their father. Though his father remarried not too long after his first wife's death, Bert remained largely in the Sherman home into adulthood.

After Bert married, he and his wife extended the same grace to a young Henry Frahm. Henry Carl Frahm [Find a Grave Memorial 112706108] was raised by Bert & Vera Dellage after his mother passed away when he was less than a year old. He was born to Carl August Frahm [Find a Grave Memorial 211921993] and Agnes Gorham adopted Untiedt [Find a Grave Memorial 211922062].
