From 1972 to 1979 he taught and coached football at Philipsburg-Osceola School District, Philipsburg. He was an avid sports fan and outdoorsman. He pursued his hobbies with the same intensity that marked his professional life. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and family at their Outer Banks home and loved sport fishing and hunting with his long time friends. He was a passionate NASCAR and Penn State fan, always taking the opportunity to attend a Penn State game or a NASCAR race.

In his retirement years, Tom was a helpful caretaker to his ailing mother and step-father. He was a devoted son, husband, and loving father and grandfather, who took great pride in his children's and family's accomplishments.

He was blessed with many longtime, loyal friends who join his family in remembering his pragmatic wisdom, moral clarity, compassion and distinctive sense of humor. His unwavering optimism serves as a role model for those who knew him.
