He grew up with his siblings on the Spindler Family farm in Fearing Township. He was full German, his father having been born in Germany. During his childhood he was surrounded by people who could speak German.
When old enough he began working on the family farm and continued to do so his entire life. The family farm, is mostly commonly known now as "August Spindler Farm", as seen on county maps. The farm is known for being the burial place of a Revolutionary War Veteran.
He married Katherine "Katie" Miller, daughter of Louis Phillip and Philippina "Phoebe" (Young) Miller, on September 8, 1907 in Stanleyville, Washington County, Ohio. They were united in marriage by Pastor William C. Kampmeier.
Together August and Katherine had eight children: Norman Franklin (1907-1940), Clarence Edward (1908-1910), Hilda Margaret (1911-1991), Louis Jacob (1913-1997), Frances (1915-), Grace Marie (1917-2002), Helen Mae (1919-1983) and Mildred (1922-2003).
August died on September 25, 1962 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. He was buried at St. Jacob Cemetery. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, five children, sixteen grandchildren and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, six sisters and two sons.
