Darby Bates
North, Oct 18 [1918] -- The remains of Darby Bates were laid to rest in Pine Branch [Penn Branch] cemetery on October 16. He joined the army four years ago and had been stationed for three years of that time at Honolulu. Some weeks ago he returned to this country and died at Camp Lewis, Tacoma, Washington, of pneumonia after a few days illness. The body was escorted across the continent by Sergeant Major Frederick.
Darby Bates was 28 years of age and had not been home since joining the army. He was a member of North Methodist church and the funeral services were conducted by the Rev C B Burns, the pastor. The Rev J J Beach, the Baptist pastor, was present and paid a tribute to the life and sacrifice of a soldier, who offers his service and gives his life for the great cause of freedom and religion for which the country is fighting. Darby Bates has not ceased to fight, though dead, for he had saved his money through the years and invested it in Liberty bonds, of which he was the owner of twelve, and through them, though dead, yet aids in the righteous cause of his country.
Present at the funeral services were three brothers, T E Bates of Savannah, Georgia, W D Bates and N M Bates of Bayonne, New Jersey, and three sisters, Mrs J H Rutland, Mrs A Billiter, and Mrs CS Harley all of North. These, together with the fther and mother, Mr and Mrs C D Bates, have the sympathy of the community. The floral tributes were especially beautiful, coming from relatives and friends, and from the Methodist Episcopal church and Bible class.
