Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a printer before the war, and entered the army as a private in the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Within a short period of time he became a Colonel of the 11th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. At the end of the war he was brevetted a Brigadier General for gallant and meritorious service during the war. After the war he became a traveling agent, hotelkeeper, and postmaster.
