Joseph served as a Corporal in the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G (Civil War). He also served as a Corporal in the 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company I.

The son of John & Anna Rebecca (Leas) Bucher, in 1860 he was a mason living in Tuscarora Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newport, Perry County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. I, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal, date unknown, and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a corporal with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Sarah Margaret Ramsey January 13, 1861.

They adopted a daughter by the name of Mae Viola Boyer, she would take the name of Mary Bucher. Mary married David Kerr.


In 1896, he married Sarah Ellen Haines, twenty years his junior, and fathered Kirk F. (b. 01/??/87 [sic]). He died from "dropsy" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor as a "lunatic in county almshouse."
