John, age 18, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 13 August 1861 at Yorkville, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company B, 12th South Carolina Infantry. He was wounded on 1 July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania and taken prisoner. He was later paroled. From April through October 1864 he was detailed as an "ambulance driver" and returned to duty 25 November 1864. He was again captured on 2 April 1865 and was held a prisoner of war at Hart's Island in New York. He signed the Oath of Allegiance on 16 June 1865 at Hart's Island, New York. His place of residence was listed as York District, South Carolina and he was described as fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, and height 5 feet and 7.5 inches tall.
