Washington Governor. He worked in a number of occupations before moving to Kansas in 1896, where he held local offices in both the Greenback Party and Union Labor Party. He also supported the Farmers’ Alliance Union, which championed the causes of western farmers. Moving to the newly formed State of Washington in 1890, he operated a drug store in Puyallup. He helped organized the Farmers’ Alliance which supported the People’s Party and was elected to the Washington State Legislature in 1894. In 1896, he was a elected as a Populist the 3rd Washington Governor and served until his death from pneumonia. While in office, he supported public education, a centralized administration, for economy in government and supported military expansion.
