When the Civil War broke out, Oborn joined the 43rd Regiment Georgia Infantry, Co F. According to documents filed by his widow, his company first marched to Camp MacDonald, and then on to Chattanooga, where he fell ill (supposedly of measles). He was sent back to Atlanta, where he died in an unspecified hospital.
His parents raised daughter Mary Buffington. Wife Flora, who remarried, raised son Oborn L Buffington.
Note: Oburn/Oborn had a cousin of the same name who died in the hospital Richmond, VA in July of the same year.
