Stephen Wenham Barber, age 79, retired scientist and former teacher and school administrator, died 30 April 1989, resulting from injuries after being hit by a car in front of his home. He frequently judged for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). In honor of Barber, the Ohio JSHS established the annual Stephen W. Barber Award, presented to high school students excelling in science. He joined The Ohio Academy of Science in 1983 and affiliated with Science Education.

Born 21 April 1910 in Grand Rapids, OH, Stephen Wenham Barber was the son of John Jones and Lilly Susan (Spicer) Barber. He earned a Bachelor's degree (1933) from Bowling Green State University and a Master's degree in chemistry (1950) from the University of Toledo. Subsequently, in the micl-1930s, he taught elementary school in West Hope, OH, and later became a teacher and principal at Neapolis Elementary School, Neapolis, OH. In the early 1940s he worked for the Collector of Internal Revenue, Toledo, OH.

During World War II, Barber worked for the former Martin Parry Corporation. For over 26 years he was a research scientist in fundamental physics "with the former Owens Illinois Glass Company Technical Center in Toledo, OH, until his retirement (1972). Among his research interests were studies on the structure and properties of vitreous silica and glasses.

Barber held membership in the American Ceramic Society, American Chemical Society, and the Technical Society of Toledo. He was elected to Sigma Xi. A member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, he was instrumental in establishing the church library.

Predeceased by his wife Clarice Barber, Stephen Wenham Barber is survived by his son Richard; sisters, Frances Daniels and Lois Bauman; and two grandchildren. Services were held 4 May 1989 at the Maison-Dardenne Mortuary, Maumee, OH. Memorial donations may be sent to the Church Foundation, Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valley View Drive, Toledo, OH 43615-2237, or a charity of the donor's choice.
