VINCENT VERACE, 22, DIES IN 5 POINTS CRASH--A Rockford man was killed Wednesday morning when the car he was driving went out of control on the curve from Charles Street to Center Terrace and crashed into a five-foot cement retaining wall.
Dead at the scene was Vincent V. Verace III, 22, 6548 Charles St. According to police reports, the car left the street and first struck a vapor light pole. It then continued sliding sideways, hit a reflector post, ran over a street sign, slid across the service drive of the Dairy Queen Drive-in, slammed into the wall and burst into flame. Police said the car upended from the impact and came to rest facing northwest. There were no skid marks found prior to the impact according to reports. There were no witnesses. Ruth Anderson, Winnebago County chief deputy coroner, said Verace died of multiple injuries received in the crash. The body also was badly burned, according to police.
A brother, Jim Verace, was killed in a motorcycle accident in June 1975, while competing in his first race in the novice class at Motosports Park, Byron.
Verace is survived by his parents, Gloria and Vincent Verace; two brothers, Michael and Ronnie; two sisters, Susan and Anne; and his grandparents, Vincent and Josephine Verace and Leo and Catherine Ruefer, all of Rockford.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Gasparini & Oliveri Funeral Home, 707 Marchesano Drive, and at 11 a.m. in St. Edwards Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
