Gilpin Eades was the son of Ezekiel Eades and Polly Barrett. He was likely named after his Maternal Grandmother, her maiden name was Gilpin. Gilpin was the fourth child, third son born to Ezekiel and Polly, he was born about 1815 probably in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Gilpin married one Patsey Martha Vest on 27 February, 1834 in WIlkes County, North Carolina. Gilpins mother was Mary Polly Barrett she was a daughter of a wealthy Planter named Jonathan Barrett and his wife Margaret Gilpin. Jonathan Barrett was born in Prince George's County, Maryland and was the son of Robert Barrett and his wife Sarah Anderson. Some state that they feel that said Jonathan Barrett was the son of another Jonathan Barrett who married Elizabeth Betsy Henderson and later Jarmin Jarfly Hagler, my research tells me something different. I have included my findings on my Eads family website which I share below on how to get there. There is too much to include here on this site with regard to my findings. Some also claim that Gilpins Grandfather, John Eades was named John Simpson Eades and or John Isaac Eades, I have found no documentation anywhere which supports either of those middle names. I think folks are combining a man named John Eades with a man named Isaac Eades, which are likely two different individuals.
An obituary was published for Gilpin in the Landmark Newspaper on 16 Jan 1880 and it reads as follows:

The Death and Singular Burial of an Eccentric Character

“ Mr. Gilpin Eades, a citizen of New Hope Township, an an individual well known all over the county, died last week, aged about 65 years. He was an illiterate man, but one of the most excellent sense, and during his lifetime had accumulated quite a comfortable property. He was noted for the eccentricity of his manner and speech, and was familiarly known everywhere as “Gilp Eades”. Before his death he extracted a promise from his family and friends that he should not be buried until three days after the breath had departed , or they supposed it had departed from his body. This from a fear that he might merely be in a trance from which he might recover too late unless more than the ordinary length of time elapsed between his death and burial. The manner of burial (and yet it cannot be properly called a burial) was as singular as that of his life, and was in strict accordance with this oft repeated instructions. The coffin in which the body was placed was carried to the family burying ground and was placed flat upon the earth. All around was built a rock wall, of a specified height (or this may have been first built and the coffin placed within, and this was covered carefully over. And thus repose the mortal remains of Gilpin Eades---not in earth, but on top of it.”

Gilpin was noted to be one of North Carolina's most eccentric Brushy Mountain Men. His grave lies at the base of Shoemaker Mountain in New Hope, Iredell, North Carolina. According to the obituary I transcribed above, it states that Gilpin had died the week prior to the writing of that obituary. We know it was published on 16 Jan 1880, one week prior to that date would have given him a death date of 9 Jan, 1880; however, just because it was published on that date, it gives no certain date as to when that article was actually written and his death date could very well have been in December of 1879, just as the Probate Date indicates.
