Mary M. Beardsley
UNADILLA — Mary M. Beardsley of Unadilla passed away April 14, 2013.
She was born on Jan. 3, 1921, at the "Becker-Beardsley" farm in South Worcester, the daughter of Carl J. and Grace Scott Beardsley, and sister of Helen B. Sahrbacher.
Her father owned and operated the large dairy farm that had been in the family since the later 1790s.
She married John MacArthur from Davenport and moved to Unadilla. They built the Mobil Oil gas station between Sidney and Unadilla in 1945. The majority of her life was spent in the area, and for 11 years she was an elementary school teacher.
She graduated from Oneonta Normal School and took her first teaching position at age 17 at her alma mater, Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport. She went from there to teach in Sidney and Unadilla, and Riverside, Calif., and finishing at the State University of Oneonta for 22 years as an assistant professor at the progressive campus school for children, "Bugbee." After Bugbee closed she continued in the Education Department and Learning Disability Center at SUCO until her retirement in 1985.
Mary was a well-educated woman with a strong spirit. After she retired, she became active in her community. She was chairwoman of the Unadilla Planning Board and instrumental in passing the zoning laws for the village. She was a longtime member of the Unadilla First Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and Sunday school teacher and active in Bible studies. She was also a trustee in the Unadilla Public Library.
She was very interested in her family's traditions and its long history in Delaware and Otsego counties. She was a very active member of the Fergusonville, Davenport, Worcester, Delaware County and Unadilla's Historical Societies.
At an early age, she taught herself to read. Growing up on an active dairy farm, she would often disappear and could be found under a tree reading a book. When she became a teacher, she helped pioneer progressive teaching methods including the "open classroom." Her joy was teaching beginner readers, and she succeeded in helping numerous students master this essential skill. She looked forward to her new students each year.
Mary also loved gardening, and she was by nature, a master gardener. Her colorful gardens were a favorite meeting place for family, friends and visitors. Many a guest would depart with "gifts" that can now be seen in gardens all over Unadilla. She was a charter member of the NYS Day Lily Society.
Mary had many friends and family: Douglas A. MacArthur (Unadilla) and ex-wife Sharon H. MacArthur (Oxford), Susie Hull (Unadilla) and Jim Hull (deceased), Jean and Ty Tyson (Micanopy, Fla.), Polly and Stephen Judd (Unadilla); grandchildren are Jason and Kris Hull (Fairfield, Iowa), Elizabeth Tyson (Micanopy, Fla.), Seth and Paulette MacArthur (Staten Island), Jessie Hull (Palmer Lake, Colo.), Alicia MacArthur and Steve Donaldson (Wellington, Colo.), Jamie Judd and Dan White (Keene, N.H.), Kelley and Annie B. Judd (Fort Collins, Colo.), and Corey and Tara K. Judd (Unadilla); great-grandchildren are Gabe, Ben and Katherine Hull, Sophie Tyson, Mia and Luca MacArthur, Adelyn MacArthur, Giada Judd and Jack White.
The family would like to thank the staff at Chestnut Park Nursing Home in Oneonta. Their tender care and support during our Mother's long illness will be remembered always.
Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church in Unadilla from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, followed by the service at 11 a.m. and burial in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.
