Charles Frederick Cole

Charles F. Cole, 92 years, a resident of Heath Road died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at his daughter's home after a brief illness.

He was born in Smyrna Mills, ME on April 30, 1921 a son of Frederick and Grace (Gerrish) Cole. He attended Kennebunk schools.

Mr. Cole served in the US Army with the 10th Mountain Division during WWII. Charles' Division fought in two decisive battles in Italy, in the North Appennines and the Po River Valley capturing over 20,000 German prisoners and effectively ending their campaign in Italy. After the war, he started his own ice business and then worked in the woods logging with his horse teams for several years. He then worked for the Maine Turnpike as Road Foreman for over 20 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing throughout the state, bear hunting with his dogs at his camp in Glenwood, ME, and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the York County Fish & Game and the York County Coon Club.

Charles was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Welch) Cole who died in 1972, his three brothers Stanley, Lloyd and Fredrick Cole and five sisters, Freda Chadbourne, Effie Patch, Albert Pierce, Iva Dowd and Fannie Webber, as well as the son of his long time companion, Harvey D. Simonds.

He is survived by his son Peter R Cole and his wife, Kelly Russell, of Kennebunk and his daughter, Charlene R. Jackson and her husband, Wesley, of Kennebunk; his brother, David Cole and his wife Carol of West Kennebunk, two sisters, Laura Palmer of Biddeford and Katie Ames of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren, Bryant Jackson, Eric Jackson, Melissa Welin and her husband Eric, Kristie Jackson, Corey Cole and Jenica Cole and Xander Spooner; five great grandchildren; and his long time companion, Leila R. Simonds and her son Tom Simonds of South Portland, whom Charles held as dear as his own son, as well as Leila's other children, Michael Simonds of Somersworth, NH and Jackie Simonds of NH; and his sister in law, Stephanie Cole, of Kennebunk.

Memorial visiting hours will be held from 12-2 PM on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043, followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 2 PM with Rev. Robert Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk with military honors.
