Services for William A. "Bill" Carnes, 74, of Slaton will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with Gene Robinson officiating.
Masonic graveside services will be at Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service.
He died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center.
He was born May 20, 1926, in Laneburg, Ark. He graduated from Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Texas. He graduated from Texas Tech in 1949 with an engineering degree and received his master's degree of education from the University of North Dakota in 1965. He married Newma Timms on March 25, 1950, in Lubbock. She died Sept. 6, 1996.
He had been a science educator in Petersburg before moving to Slaton in 1958. He taught science, chemistry and physics at Slaton High School from 1958 to 1975. He became a curriculum supervisor for Slaton Independent School District in 1976 and retired in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Slaton Retired Classroom Teachers Association, Slaton and Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Secondary Principals and Supervisors Association and the Association of Curriculum and Supervision Development
He was a past Grand Master of the Slaton Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Lubbock Gem and Mineral Society and the Rolling Rock Club.
Survivors include a son, James William Carnes of Lubbock; three daughters, D'ann Mosely of Hurst, Kayleen Bevers of Hamshire and Jean Cates of Austin; a sister, Katherine of Tyler; and 12 grandchildren.
