Elsa K. Abolins, a resident of Austin, Minn. the past 19 years, was born September 28, 1889 in Riga, Latvia and passed away July 8 near Kalamazoo, Mich. at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 10 days.
Death came as the result of a heart attack while visiting friends in Michigan. Elsa became a school teacher in Latvia. She was brought by the Catholic Church from a concentration camp after World War II to the United States, where she became a citizen. She made her home at Austin, Minn. with Mrs. Marion Larwenson.
She had visited in Onawa with the Herbert Shook family. Elsa had no relatives in the United States. In Austin she was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. The funeral mass was held at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 10 at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa. Father Thomas K. Mollow officiated.
Casket bearers were James Shook, Dan Benjamin, William Lawrenson, Farrell Orr and Don Loomis.
Interment was at the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson funeral home of Onawa.

Because Abolins is listed as her divorced surname, likely she immigrated under a different surname.

In 1889 Latvia was part of the Tsarist Russian Empire. They were using the Julian calendar which makes her birth date appear a little over a week earlier. (My Latvian immigrant grandmother born 1898 liked to use her Julian birthdate because it made her feel younger!
