Born in Penn. in 1831. In 1850 Federal Census for Chester co., Penn. he is found as 19 yr old living in David D. Brownback farmstead. At some date he marrys Melissa C. Curtis because his oldest child, a daughter Mary E., is born in Wadsworth,Ohio on May 23, 1854. In 1860 Federal census for Shellburg, Canton Twsp., Benton Co., Iowa he is found as a 28 yr old farmer, with Real estate valued at $600. and a personal estate valued at $150., living with his wife Malissa C. 27 yrs old and born in Ohio, his daughter Mary E. 6 yrs old also born in Ohio, and son John 1 yr old born in Iowa. Benjamin enlists Sept. 6, 1862 at age 31 in Co. G, 5th Iowa Infantry. K.I.A. at Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. on May 16, 1863 and is buried on the battlefield the next day. His wife files for a widow's pension on Sept. 11, 1863 with application number 32.866 and receives pension certificate 25.152. She remarrys to Michael Lands and moves to Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa. There she files application number 154.259 for a minors pension on Nov. 5, 1867 (which must have been when she remarried and lost her widow pension) and lists herself as the child"s guardian and receives pension certificate number 112.395. In the 1870 Federal census for Davenport, Iowa Mary E. Binder is listed as 16 yrs old living with her mother Melissa Lands age 38 and her husband Michael Lands age 57.
